~Family of Earth~
a poem

Woodpecker, Woodpecker, why do you knock?
Do you call upon me, before acorn and flock?
Only a Lizard drinks Sun from a rock!
Woodpecker, Woodpecker, why do you knock?

Stately old Oak, so great is your girth...
Gracing our land since the time of its birth...
Only a Squirrel may true know your worth!
Stately old Oak, so great is your girth...

Boulder of granite, how broad is your chest!
Of rocks in the valley, I think thee the best...
So hard to imagine the length of your quest!
Boulder of granite, how broad is your chest...

Douglas the Fir, so strong of the wood!
As graceful a tree as has ever stood...
A lofty reflection of all that is good,
Douglas the Fir, so strong of the wood.

Tumbling stream wearing bubbles of foam,
you stay for the Spring, and then leave us alone...
I wonder how many reflections you've shown!
Tumbling stream wearing bubbles of foam...

Mountain of green, wearing mist as a veil,
Are you mourning the loss of an Indian trail?
Only a lizard may let go his tail!
Mountain of green wearing mist as a veil...

Mighty Sequoia, magical tree,
taller, older, and wiser than we...
Showing us all of the things we can be!
Mighty Sequoia, magical tree...

Family of Earth, 'neath a canopy of stars,
Spangled with Milky way, Pluto, and Mars...
Love is eternal, and fleeting the scars-
Family of Earth, 'neath a canopy of stars!
